The Backward Life

“The road to hell is paved with works-in-progress.” —Philip Roth

This is what our ten year old does when we aren't around. She uses our computers to make highly amusing videos of herself.

I wrote this column for the Arts section and thought it was a lot of fun. Feel free to add more of your life lessons.

Robert Fulghum wrote that all you really need to know in life you learned in kindergarten. He included things like play fair; warm cookies and milk are good for you and share everything. While this poem rings true for most times in a person’s life, it doesn’t cover some of the things students encounter in college, specifically at the University of Idaho. So, to demonstrate the concept here is a new list:

Some of the things you need to know about college and life you can learn at the University of Idaho

·        Warm cookies and milk may be good for you, but they’ll cost you more than $5.00.

·        Fifteen minute parking really means 15 minutes.
·        Elevators, no matter what you may think, are slower than taking the stairs.
·        Bullies aren’t just found in grade school.
·        You don’t think you could possibly make more than 500 copies in a semester and then you do.
·        Throwing away your garbage takes a Ph.D.
·        It’s possible to alienate all your friends and co-workers with social networking sites.

·        Just because some one is legally an adult, doesn’t make them a grown-up.
·        Going to WinCo on Sunday is like trying to part the Red Sea.
·        Women’s centers aren’t just for girls.
·        Drinking copious amounts of caffeine doesn’t guarantee you’ll stay awake during class.
·        When the ad says the apartment is 800 sq. ft., only about 300 of it is livable.
·        Sometimes you wonder why “Animal House” is not considered a documentary.
·        Projects that require you to work in a group don’t always promote good relations.
·        Uggs and leggings are not a fashion statement — they are a necessity.

·
·        College students couldn’t communicate without their opposable thumbs.
·        You should look both ways before crossing the street, even in a crosswalk.
·        Covering your mouth, washing your hands, using hand sanitizer and staying home when you’re sick   won’t always prevent the spread of illness.

·        It’s okay to miss your mom.
Happy cows can come from Idaho, even if they have holes in their sides.

·        Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean it isn’t important to someone else.
·        Paying for classes you don’t attend is a waste of money.
·        College doesn’t really prepare you for real life, real life prepares you for college.
·        No matter how old you are, it’s never too late to get an education.
·        Getting the mail can be the most exciting part of the day.
·        Some textbooks were never meant to be read, they were meant to make someone money.

·        You might need notes from your waitress one day, so make sure you tip.
·        The word ‘orientation’ is a misnomer.
·        Misnomer means giving something a wrong or inappropriate name.
·        You don’t care what a misnomer is.
·        Home-cooked meals are cause for celebration.
·        You’re not as smart as you think you are.
·        Having money left in your wallet at the end of the month is an amazing feat.

  And…
No matter how hard it gets or how overwhelmed you become, you will get through it.

The Vandal Marching Band performs Thriller by Michael Jackson during half-time.

We've been pretty busy these past few weeks and finally have a quiet weekend to ourselves. Football started here at the University of Idaho and our Vandals have decided to surprise everyone by winning some games. We are now 3-1.
Maggie and Moira went to the first home game with us. It was a lot of fun with the exception of the man who walked into the women's restroom to pee in a stall with the door open while Maggie was in line. I am going to assume he was intoxicated, otherwise it really lowers my already dubious attitude toward certain students of the Greek variety.

Speaking of drunk, universities around the U.S. have decided to hold tournaments for beer pong. That's right folks, beer pong. Just recently they held one at Washington State University— just over the state line. I myself am still a little unsure of what the point and rules of the game are, but I think I would rather stay in the dark. Wal-Mart, however, must have got wind of the idea because they are now catering to drunken college students and their beer pong sport by placing the ping-pong balls strategically next to the red beer cups.

Enough about that. We also went to the fair. The fair here is free, it really only takes up about half of a city block, but it is still fun. I mean, there were elephant ears, so how could it not be fun? I went on a ride with the kids and felt the need to vomit pretty much the whole time we were there. The kids loved the rides, but my favorite part are the animals. This year, we found a bouffant-haired chicken. She looked like a prize winner to me.

I took all these photos with my new iPhone. While the picture quality isn't that great, I love that I can take pictures everywhere I go and post them there for your enjoyment. Any requests?
My mom really likes that reality show Intervention, where families ambush their loved ones in order to get them into rehab for drug or alcohol addiction. Well, I believe that my family is about to stage their own intervention, but not in the conventional sense. Maggie, my 9 year-old has become unusually attached to the video game Guitar Hero. From the basement at her grandma's house all you can hear is the music to Slow Ride playing over and over again as she tries her best to master the three finger chords and strumming. It is quite amusing to watch actually as her facial expressions change and she rocks out lifting her guitar and shaking it back and forth. Then again, she can barely tear herself away from it to go to the bathroom and even to eat.

In order for you to get the full effect Jon has prepared the following video for your viewing pleasure. You decide: addiction or entertainment?
