The Backward Life

“The road to hell is paved with works-in-progress.” —Philip Roth

This past weekend we went to several yard sales. We don't go very often, and this weekend was the reason why. We had planned on looking for some end wrenches for Jon to use in a project he is doing. Instead, we found a lot of things we did not need. Do we really need three sets of darts with real feathers? Granted, they are real feathers, and we do have a dart board, but no on has thrown anything at it - dart or otherwise - for at least a year. I did get a few good things, like a lamp for my office and a few necklaces.

All the yard sale shopping led us to the conclusion that we need to get rid of some stuff, if only to make way for new stuff. So, we are going to have our own yard sale on Saturday. We have already put together a few things, and I think our pile will grow quite a bit as the week goes on.

Yard sales do make me a bit anxious though. I worry our items are not worth what we think they are, or that people will whisper to each other about how ugly things are, or how many weeds we still need to pull out of our flower garden. Pretty much I am worried that the people who come shop at my sale will be yard salers just like me. I try not too judge too much. For one thing, I am just excited to see all the things people have in their houses. For example, at one yard sale we went to they were selling more than 100 tobacco pipes. And for $5 each, they were making a killing. Some of them were really cool with ornate carving or silver handles. It makes you wonder what other things they collect. My mind goes to snuff boxes and even preserved or mummified human lungs. (Can you tell I have been watching that show Oddities?)

We won't be selling anything as unique as that, but if someone is looking for some good summer reading, a bird cage, a wireless Nintendo controller, a small entertainment center or a homebaked cookie (Moira is running a bake sale) then we've got you covered.
I read so many blogs where the authors seem to have such interesting lives and I wonder, why isn't my life more interesting? The most excitement we get in our house these days is when the Sears tool catalog arrives in the mail. I can forget about Jon even looking at me, let alone kissing me, for days. Why would he need my affection when he can page through the one-inch thick semi-gloss pages of all the things he wants but can't afford?

Does Sears know their catalog is akin to porn? Jon was drooling over some sort of vice grip he saw this morning as I was leaving for work. He said, "You should have thrown this away and not given it to me." So, I ripped it out of his hands and threw it in the trash can. His reply: "You know I'm just going to dig that out after you leave, right?" I'm grateful it is just full of tools and not naked women. Maybe Jon will make a collage of all the things he wants from Sears and post it on our bedroom wall to remind me what he wants for Father's Day. As long as it isn't on our ceiling above our bed, I'm okay with it.
Father's Day is fast approaching and I am never sure what to get my husband. I usually go the tool route and help the kids make something special. Jon seems to have just about every tool known to man (reasonably priced that is), so this year I am at a loss. I will probably go with pottery/ceramic tools, but who wants tools of their trade? Okay, that was a stupid question. I would be delirious with happiness if someone  bought me my favorite pencils in bulk.

A tie might work. Jon likes ties, even if our son tends to steal the best ones for himself. When the kids were small they made Jon a custom tie. We found a white tie and the kids used paint to put their handprints all over it in primary colors. It was cute. It was worn once. Jon doesn't go for cutesy ties. He doesn't wear ties with Garfield or Disney characters and heaven forbid he should ever put a holiday-themed tie on. No reindeer or Santa or beer bottles with Santa hats. That is not his style. He goes for the more classy look.

I've made Father's Day cards that look like a shirt and tie. You know the ones. They do them at school and church with the kids. They are plastered all over the craft sites in June. But, I think this year I might make a cake like these tie cakes. They would make a perfect sweet treat for Father's Day.

If you like ties, or know someone who likes ties, check out this website. This kid adores ties and he's pretty cute too.
